Closed Moulding
Closed Moulding is usually when fibres are laid inside a female mould, a male mould is then secured on top to plug the gap. In some processes, the mixed resin is poured in before the male mould is put in position. However, it is more common for to be introduced to the dry fibres after the mould has formed a sealed cavity.
The main advantage of Closed Moulding over Open Moulding is, pressure is exerted on the infused laminate, this forces air out of the fibres and ensures the resin impregnates every fibre. This higher percentage of impregnation results in a lower void content and an increased percentage of fibre reinforcement.
