Spline & Gear Rolling is the process of imparting Spline or Gear Geometry onto a surface by deforming a blank in a die without subtracting any material.
In this process a blank shaft is rolled between Shaping Rolls that exert pressure on the surface of the blank at the points the rolls touch the blank or shaft.
The shaft is repeatedly rolled, with the material yielding and displacing where force is applied from the rolls to the shaft. as a result the blank takes on the form of the rolls (the negative form).
No material is removed, just displaced, creating a high integrity grain structure in comparison with other production methods.
This process encompasses the specific use of this rolling process to form Splines or Gears. This excludes the roll forming of threads or helical forms , instead see "Thread Rolling".
