Sand Casting

The process of Sand Casting is one of the most commonly used casting production methods.

The process uses Sand to make disposable moulds into which molten metal is poured. Typically the moulds are left to set naturally in air (airset) or a binder is used. Sand is an ideal material to produce moulds from as it is inexpensive, easily moulded and has a high melting point (higher than most metals).

In Sand Casting multiple die parts including inserts can make up the finished die prior to metal pouring.

Sand casting is not to be confused with "Shell Moulding", another casting process, in which, constant thickness moulds are used that do not rely on a "container".
