The hot billet or pre-form is manipulated back and forth and around whilst being Pressed or Hammered to generate fairly simple shapes.

The forging force can be provided by any number of methods, including hydraulic press and drop or hammer forge. The common feature here is the open die which relies on the operator to impart the required shape and size.
