In this process a ring of hot pre-formed material is Progressively changed in diameter and geometry.

This is typically achieved by applying pressure with rollers across the ring section whilst rotating the ring through the rollers.

Pressure is applied to the ring of material via rollers and in some cases shapers to impart geometries other than a square profile.
