MTL is a dynamic, fast moving technology-based contract manufacturing specialist in the metal sector

Our Head Office and main facility in Rotherham, South Yorkshire offers 28,000 sq. meters of manufacturing space set in 13 hectares of private land.   We process circa 25,000 tonnes of material annually and are capable of handling all sizes and types of work from carbon steel to aluminium.   We can cut parts up to 25m long x 5m wide and can produce complex formed components to within 0.5 degrees of accuracy using the world’s largest robotic press brake.   We have an impressive array of CNC machining centres, allowing us to add further value to our customer requirements.   Our fabrication facilities offer welding to ISO EN 3834-2 status and have a 14,000 sq. m fabrication space with 10 modern, robotic welding systems. We are an established major exporter of components and fabrications manufactured from specialist materials such as wear resistant steels, high strength steels and armour plate both in steel and alloys.   Many of our customers rely on MTL for its manufacturing expertise with these materials and often utilize our services in the Design for Manufacture phase. They also appreciate our wide range of stock material and know they can count on us for short lead-times due to material availability. Our core mission is to provide specialist engineering services that improve and support our customer’s capability in the production of high strength steel components, complex cold formed parts made of high tensile and armoured steel.

NOTES ABOUT OUR CAPABILITY

LASER CUTTING

Our Messer is the largest laser cutting machine in the UK, capable of cutting both chamfers and weld preps of up to +/-50 degrees, improving efficiency and productivity – reducing costs and lead times for our customers. This machine can cut parts up to 20m long x 3.2m wide x 25mm thick.

 

Our profile cutting machine is capable of profiling carbon steels to a large scale – 10m x 4m and a thickness of 120mm. The machine is effective when used on tough metals including Hardox and Weldox.

 

 

WATERJET CUTTING

Our four head 12m x 3m Bystronic waterjet is one of the leading waterjet cutting machines on the market, capable of cutting materials up to 200mm thick.

 

 

HIGH DEFINITION PLASMA CUTTING

MTL has invested in the latest high definition plasma cutting technology, our new machine has a large format cutting area of 25m x 5m and twin head cutting capability to allow high-speed cost effective cutting of components up to 50mm thick. With two cutting heads, this machine has the capability of cutting both chamfers up to +/- 40 degrees.

 

 

PRESS BRAKING

MTL is recognised as a world leader in cold forming steel and aluminium plate using its SMARTbend process. In particular when forming Hardox, armoured steel and armoured aluminium up to 60mm thick.

 

We have a wide range of CNC press braking equipment, capable of pressing components up to 7.2m wide. We have invested in a Ursviken 640 tonne CNC press brake with a 600 Kg capacity robotic handling system.

 

 

PLASMA TUBE CUTTING

Our tube cutting capabilities:

  • 120mm – 1000mm diameter tube cutting
  • 40mm cutting thickness
  • Complex developed profiles
  • Weld preps to +/- 40 degrees
  • Achieves a tolerance of +/- 1mm

 

 

CNC MACHINING

We have a range of CNC machining centres giving us the ability to mill, drill, plane, bore and tap. The CNC machines are capable of machining High Brinell materials such as Hardox and Armoured Steel to 600 HB.

MTL, we hold a vast range of stock plate material in their state-of-art-facility in Rotherham, UK, to meet their customers’ needs. Whether it be for meeting a ballistic threat level specification to relining a bucket from Hardox plate. MTL hold the stock and manage their own logistics fleet to deliver so you don’t have to.   Their relationship with the major steel mills in both Europe and the USA allows us to respond quickly to their customers’ requirements using some of the best materials on the market. Plates are available for a wide range of categories in numerous specifications and grades and with plates readily available up to 12 metres long, 3.2m wide and 200mm thick.

We continually research and develop to maintain our place at the forefront of the defence industry.   We offer unique solutions for vehicle protection including: • Full vehicle development including prototyping & survivability validation • Application of rolled homogeneous armour steel and armoured aluminium grades, as formed components or as bent/flat engineered blanks and kits • Vehicle fabrication and assembly with robot welding technology.     CONSTRUCTION & QUARRYING We are a major supplier to the Construction and Quarrying sectors. A high-quality service has allowed us to establish strong working relationships with market leading global companies such as Sandvik, Caterpillar, JCB, Komatsu and Terex.   MTL has invested heavily in latest state-of-the-art profiling equipment including a 12 metre waterjet machine and a laser cutting machine capable of producing parts of up to 20m x 3.2m x 25mm, with a bevel or weld prep of up to +/- 50 degrees. This allows us to increase efficiency and productivity, which generates cost savings for our customers.     OFFSHORE & RENEWABLES MTL has produced over 300 Boat Landing Systems for both UK and European offshore wind farms. These include, Nordsee Ost, Borkum West, Ormonde, and most recently Humber Gateway. Recent projects within this field include cable and pipe handling floatation devices, floatation buoys, tower platforms, reel drums and J tubes.     RECYCLING European and UK legislative targets have led to a substantial boom in the sector as organisations look to increase their level of recycling. Our research indicates that this growth will continue unabated for OEMs and end users with parts made from mild steel and Hardox wear plate.   SMARTwear is the latest technological advancement in reverse engineering providing options for customers without drawings or drawing facilities. Using our state of the art reverse engineering scanner, MTL is capable of producing a manufacturing drawing using existing wearparts. Once the wearpart has gone through this process it is possible to review the design, manufacturing process with the scope to increase wear life and decrease cost.   As the largest Hardox Wearparts Centre in the UK, we have a wealth of experience in manufacturing parts from abrasive resistant and high-strength steels. We are able to assist our customers with various requirements, including shredder blades, shear blades, granulator blades, pulveriser hammers and liner plates.     RAIL MTL is a supplier to major firms in the freight wagon and passenger rail sector. We also have an expert, in-house team to manufacture integral parts for use as rail infrastructure. We are Bombardier Transportation SEAP approved and accredited to EN10585.   Category level 1 for welding allows us to produce safety critical parts, including body shell components, bogie frames, bolsters and external fuel tanks. We are also able to cut, press and machine parts for OEM customers to weld.

After a very competitive and tender process against other leading engineering companies in the UK, MTL was chosen as a manufacturing partner for FPE. MTL was competing for the only large UK vehicle contract to be run from 2010 to present day, proving through competitive pricing and value added service that they were the best option.

 

From the point of design release, the pressures of producing a combat-ready vehicle, fit for use in support of combat operations in Afghanistan, all in the shortest timeframe possible were ever present. Working closely with the engineers from FPE and Ricardo throughout the project allowed MTL to respond to rapidly changing design amendments and still manage to meet delivery schedules. The key to the success of this on-going program is the integration of its highly experienced engineering team working together around the clock to overcome problems and share knowledge to deliver lifesaving products.

 

MTL has supported this program with its Design for Manufacture service and has proven itself to be a highly adaptable manufacturing company able to nearly double weekly production. To date, MTL has built in excess of 420 V hulls for this program and prides itself as the chosen manufacturing partner for General Dynamics – FPE. This project is an excellent example of our ability to provide a workable solution to the increasingly demanding requirements of our customers and their clients, and then to apply the lessons learned from this across all areas, to the benefit of the wider business.
