Through-feed as suggested by the name, involves the continuous feeding of components or bars between the grinding wheels.

 

As a result, long lengths (as long as is practical given the space around the machine) can be centreless ground.

 

Due to the nature of the process - the component must have the same cross section diameter along its full length to facilitate its entry into one side of the machine and exit from the other (multi-diameter shafts can be ground, but only on the outer diameter by this method).
