Filament Winding is simply the winding of a continuous wetted fibre around a rotating mandrel. It is used to produced highly tolerance tubes, pressure vessels and tanks. Despite the simplicity of the process, Filament Winding is a highly specialised process, it is often computer controlled and highly automated.

The process comprises of a dry continuous strand fibres being fed through a resin bath and wound onto a rotating mandrel. An automated directional arm follows a set pattern, giving the component the required strength in the required directions. Once the cycle has finished the laminate is left to cure on the mandrel. The cured part is then removed from the mandrel.
