Zinc Plating is a process where metals such as iron and steel and covered by a zinc coating to create a physical, sacrificial barrier on the surface to protect the metal from oxidisation and corrosion.

The process applies a thin coating of zinc metal onto the surface of another metal component. It is a low-cost process which is relatively easy to perform, making it a very common choice within industry. Popular applications include electrical transmission components, and the defence industry utilise zinc plating in the manufacture of tanks and other armoured vehicles.

Zinc durability when exposed to seawater is reduced, so Zinc Plating is not popular in marine applications. Additionally, zinc does not hold up well against acids or alkalis. In these situations, powder or plastic coating would be a better option to protect a metal component.
