Hard Chrome Plating is a finish which is added to a component to improve its wear resistance and hardness.
This process utilises a chromic acid-based electrolyte. The component to be plated is made the cathode and lead is used for the anodes. Using a DC current, the chromium metal begins to build on the surface of the component.
While Hard Chrome Plating isn’t necessarily harder than Decorative Chrome Plating, the finish is much thicker. This increases its durability and can therefore withstand increased wear. Hard Chrome Plating is generally metallic and shiny in appearance and has good resistance to stains and abrasions.
Hard Chrome Plating is typically applied to hardened steel products. Popular uses in industry include a range or large tools and equipment.
