finishing-and-treatment-manufacturing-processes > Glass & Ceramic Bead Peening
This process involves the use of small spheres made from glass or ceramic, known as ‘shot’ or ‘bead’, propelled at the surface of a component with the intention of inducing compressive stresses.
Ceramic and Glass Bead Peening is particularly useful when contamination of the parent metal is not acceptable, or when retaining beneficial oils in the surface of the component is necessary. This is particularly the case with transmission components and gears.
All shot size, weight and velocity are catered for within this process category. This category is limited to "Glass or Ceramic Shot/Bead". For shot peening with Metal media see "Metal Shot Peening".
