finishing-and-treatment-manufacturing-processes > Chromate Conversion Coating

This process involves the use of chemicals to convert the surface of applicable materials to a stable form of Chromate, which is integral to the material surface.

The material surface can be coloured, however the exact colour is dependent upon the exact process. Chromating is typically used as a pre-treatment for further processing by painting or powder coating, as it provides greatly improved surface adhesion properties, especially in aluminium.

This category encompasses all forms of Chromate Conversion Coating, on all applicable materials. The coating is also known by many trade names including Alocrom and SurTec.

Applicable materials are diverse, with aluminium being a popular base. Steel, zinc and zinc plated steel, magnesium, cadmium, copper and others can all be Chromate Conversion Coated.
